Occam’s Razor

In its simplest form, Occam’s Razor states that one should make no more assumptions than needed. Put into everyday language, it says

Given two equally predictive theories, choose the simpler.

I had a recent experience with this principle. My co-worker came up to me and told me that we were seeing a big drop in terms of user sign-up for my company’s web business.

Obviously, there are many things we could contribute that too. Holiday season, weekend factor, you name it. Until I found out there was a bug fix release for a totally seperate business unit. While making all the assumptions about external factors, we should first look into our own closet.

My two cents for Occam’s Razor: Most problems are from internal.
