The Drive to the High End

We all have seen it. Agriculture jobs, manufacturing jobs have gone for good. Software outsourcing sector is hot as hell. Recently, wallstreet starts shipping financial analyst positions overseas. Am I worried about my own future?

Three major forces are in play:

1. The base of the pyramid is always larger than the top. There are more jobs in the base camp then the high-end positions. It will be harder and harder to get a good salary as a programmer, yet the salary for senior managers will continue to rise.

2. The spread of innovation is always faster than its creation, which means, western companies are somewhat forced to focus on the high-end, while helpless watching the low-end being eaten away. This will continue until the complete chain is dominated by developing countries. At that moment, a new technology or industry has to be created or die trying.

3. For developing countries, they desperately need money and technology, which are held in the western companies. This determines the profit distribution of the low-end products. Margin will concentrate towards the company who participate in the sourcing trend.

My conculstion? Lower level of jobs will be hard to find, technology shift will be more common and profit margin for the west will continue to rise.
